A methodology developed within Relational Trauma therapy

NRE is a practical, neurologically-informed approach designed to enhance resilience to traumatic stress, providing therapists and their clients with effective tools for orientation, containment, and relational management of traumatic arousal

Relational Trauma Therapy specializes in understanding and effectively addressing hypo-aroused states (under-activated states) within trauma work. Our clinical experience has highlighted the crucial role of addressing neurologically under-activated systems through sensory rehabilitation and education. This insight has culminated in the development of the Neuro Resilience Exercises (NRE) methodology

Neuro Resilience Exercises (NRE)

A Level 1 online course with Kolbjørn Vårdal as teaching trainer and Ayuna Pedersen as course-manager

This online-course offers 7 x 3 hours live sessions : 10.September - 24.September - 8.October - 22.October - 5.November - 26.November - 03.December, 2025

Teaching hrs are on 5-8 pm CET/CEST all 7 times

5 basic elements in working with NRE will be presented

– 1 element will be the focus in each out of 5 of the sessions – and 2 sessions will focus on integration:

1) Sept 10: Trauma and Neurological Resilience.

Why sensory education and rehabilitation are essential in trauma-related work. Understanding the neurological signatures of resilience, acute stress, PTSD, and PTSD with dissociation. Practical interventions that strengthen neurological resilience.

2) Sept 24: Desensitizing Startle Responses and Pre-affective Shock

How the nervous system is triggered by sensory stimuli leading to prediction errors (e.g., hypervigilance).
Techniques for enhancing proprioception and motor control to improve presence and regulate arousal effectively.

3) Oct 08: Releasing Tunnel Vision and Supporting Contextualization

Recognizing how trauma states impact the ability to contextualize experiences, resulting in either hypo-focus or hyper-focused tunnel vision.
Practical vision-based exercises that help regulate arousal and enhance contextual understanding and stability.

4) Oct 22: Integration. Dynamic Adaptability – The Importance of Spatial Awareness

Deepening and integrating course learning, emphasizing spatial awareness and bodily orientation.
Understanding the significance of "two-way stretch" and anti-gravitational postural muscles for resilience and stability

5) Nov. 05:

Trauma as a Gravitational Pull

Exploring how unresolved trauma can feel like a gravitational force pulling individuals away from presence and orientation.
Practical vestibular exercises that support grounding, externalization of traumatic sensations, and strengthen orienting abilities.

6) Nov 26:

From Dissociation to Association

Understanding dissociation as a breakdown in orientation and contact with the present moment, characterized by turning away (rotation) from trauma-related contexts.
Learning techniques to address orienting tensions and early warning signs, thus creating better conditions for effective memory processing.

7) Dec 03: Integration. Resilience and Sensory Integration

Integration of course content, facilitating professional and personal application.
Using NRE as an ongoing methodology for managing stress, regulating arousal, and creating safe, relational engagements with one's own reactions and environment.

What to expect in this workshop

Who is this course for?

Requirements and recommendations:

This is a level 1 course in RTT online international courses.

This course is for practitioners, consultants, psychotherapists or other professionals working with other people therapeutically or in teaching – who wants to add and integrate a neurologically informed lens on stress and trauma. Previous experience with teaching that includes and awakens hypo-response is recommended but not mandatory. If you have limited experience with hypo-response we will recommend you to buy 'Including and awakening hypo-response' special edition.

If you are uncertain if you fulfill the criteria for signing up for the Neuro Resilience Exercises (NRE) course, please contact one of us on [email protected]

If you want to purchase the special edition of “Including and awakening hypo-response” and/or "Hyper and hypo interwoven", please find them on the website
